Whatsapp Web : The Next Inning

Whatsapp – which revolutionized the world of instant messaging, so much that it was seen as a future threat to Facebook’s Messenger, has made it’s way to our personal computers though just as an extension but it’s an added feature.

With ever increasing user-base of 700+ million, which is growing at an incredible pace of around 25 million users per month sending around 30 billion messages per day, Whatsapp is the world’s largest instant messaging service. These statistics were more than enough for Facebook to buy Whatsapp for an exorbitant price of $19 Billion in February of 2014.

After the purchase by Facebook, rumors were in circulation that Whatsapp could soon make it’s appearance on PC. Though the rumors didn’t came true 100% as Whatsapp Web is just an extension which couldn’t be used as an standalone application and must be in sync with your mobile phone at all times.

According To Whatsapp’s Official Blog : “Our web client is simply an extension of your phone: the web browser mirrors conversations and messages from your mobile device — this means all of your messages still live on your phone.”

Before telling you how to use Whatsapp Web there are some requirements which you must fulfill, they are :

  • You must have a smartphone running Android, Windows, Blackberry or Nokia’s Symbian S60. Apple’s iPhone can’t be used as they don’t support background multitasking and push notifications, Sorry iPhone users(Poor Me).
  • Next is Google’s Chrome browser, Whatsapp Web only supports Chrome as it has the best push notification system according to them though compatibility for other browsers could come at a later date.
  • Most recent version of Whatsapp on your mobile phone.
  • And the last one is continuous sync and internet connection on your mobile phone.

Now that you know the requirements let me tell you exactly how you can use Whatsapp Web. Connecting with your PC is plain simple even for the most non-technical users.

  2. Now open Whatsapp on your mobile phone and go to : Menu -> Whatsapp Web for opening the camera and reading the QR code.
  3. Just point your phone’s camera to the QR code on your PC and you will be synced instantly.

Somethings which the web version of Whatsapp can’t do are :

Limitations :-

  • You cannot change your profile picture or status from the web interface.
  • You cannot start or leave a group.
  • Not possible to share contacts.
  • No blocking of annoying users is permitted by the web interface.

So after reading so many restrictions of the web version you must be thinking what is the benefit of using it. I must tell you that there are more features than limitations, which are :

Features :-

  • You can also download any type of media directly on your PC like Images, Videos or Audio files.
  • View contact’s info which are on your phone.
  • You can also use your webcam and microphone to record video and audio and share them directly with your contacts.
  • Though not a feature but anyways, you can type messages very fast using your computers keyboard.
  • Connecting multiple computers to your phone for future use is also possible. They can be disconnected at any time required from your phone.

Security Flaw In Drupal Affects Millions Of Sites

Security Flaw In Drupal Affects Millions Of Sites

If you are an owner of a website which is based on popular C. M. S.(Content Management System) Drupal then this article is a must read for you. If your site is running Drupal version 7 then you may also have been affected by this newly discovered flaw which could allow a malicious user to modify or take complete control of your site.

According To Drupal :-

SA-CORE-2014-005 Drupal Core – Sql Injection,

“Drupal 7 includes a database abstraction API to ensure that queries executed against the database are sanitized to prevent SQL injection attacks.

A vulnerability in this API allows an attacker to send specially crafted requests resulting in arbitrary SQL execution. Depending on the content of the requests this can lead to privilege escalation, arbitrary PHP execution, or other attacks.

This vulnerability can be exploited by anonymous users.”

Updating Drupal to the latest version which is 7.32 will fix the vulnerability but would not recover an already compromised site. So if your website is already affected then you can follow these instructions to recover it.

Google Launches The Latest Android : Android Lollipop

Google has finally unveiled the latest (Android Version 5.0) and the 13th major release to it’s popular smartphone operating system : Android L or Android Lollipop. This new update features a revamped visual design called the ‘material design’ which uses moving icons and size shifting fonts. One of the most stand-out thing this update will bring would be it’s ability to run efficiently on phones even with 512 MB of RAM. Older versions were clearly more memory exhaustive.

With Android Lollipop Google also launched three new devices – The Nexus 6 with Motorola, Nexus 9 Tablet with HTC and a new Set-Top Box with Taiwan based firm ASUS.

With these 3 new devices Google attempts to unify users Android devices. While revealing these new devices, Google’s Vice-President Sundar Pichai didn’t held-off a sarcastic comment to Apple’s new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6+ , “We aren’t only trying to ship two products, We are trying to enable thousands of products at the same time.”

Samsung Develops New WiFi Standard That Is 5 Times Faster

We all wonder why the transmission speeds mentioned on our WiFi routers are not realized in real world but that question could soon be answered by Samsung. The South-Korean company  has developed a new WiFi standard that is able to send data 5 times faster than the current ones.

This new technology is said to be based on 60Ghz band which will allow speeds upto 575 MB. Earlier attempts to use this band had failed because these waves travel by line of sight and have trouble penetrating walls but Samsung overcame this problem by using ‘wide-coverage beam-forming antennae’. Samsung indicated that this new technology will be available from next year.

In a press release Samsung said :

‘Unlike the existing 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi technologies, Samsung’s 802.11ad standard 60 GHz Wi-Fi technology maintains maximum speed by eliminating co-channel interference, regardless of the number of devices using the same network’.

Why Everyone’s Not Upgrading To iOS8

Last month when Apple released their next installment of their mobile operating system -iOS8, in just a week near about 46% of total iPhone users upgraded to iOS8 but that counter didn’t move more than a percent after that. So the question stands – Why Everyone’s Not Upgrading To iOS8.

James Cook of Business Insider believes that these numbers doesn’t reflect true stats because Apple uses a very unscientific method for measuring total users who have upgraded to iOS8. Apple measures total number of users (running iOS8) who have accessed the app store in a given time-frame but there are users who don’t download a single app in months.

There could be many reasons why iDevice users aren’t upgrading, one of the biggest factors could be the first version of the update which made the devices unable to connect to cellular networks or use the fingerprint sensor. Although the update was pulled-off within hours and a new version iOS 8.0.2 was released to fix the bugs, yet it affected approximate 40,000 users in that minute time-frame. The fact that this update unlike iOS7 is not a major redesign could also make the users thinking twice about upgrading.

As of today Apple have stopped signing iOS7 so be very much sure whether you want to upgrade or not. After this, downgrading to iOS7 would also be hectic.

So let’s wait and see, when the percentage of devices running iOS8 reaches a decent mark.

Ethan Zuckerman : Man Behind Pop-Up Ad’s Say’s “I’m Sorry”

I can guarantee that any person who has accessed the internet must have experienced and hated the most irritating thing of the world wide web – The Pop-Up Ads.

You hate Pop-Up Ad’s ? So does the guy who created them.

The creator of one of the biggest nuisances of the internet, Ethan Zuckerman feels sorry for creating them. He mention’s his apology in this weeks article in The Atlantic.

Ethan Zuckerman worked for the webpage hosting site Tripod.com from 1994 to 1999, when it was struggling to develop a revenue model.

He writes, “Along the way we ended up creating one of the most hated tools in the advertiser’s toolkit: the pop-up ad. It was a way to associate an ad with a user’s page without putting it directly on the page, which advertisers worried would imply an association between their brand and the page’s content, I’m sorry. Our intentions were good. 20 years [into] the ad-supported web, we can see that our current model is bad, broken, and corrosive.”

An idea which started as a solution to the complaint raised by a car maker that it’s banner ad’s were showing on the page which was NSFW. So Zuckerman wrote the code to open the ad in a new window, laying the groundwork for what would become one of the Web’s biggest nuisances.
